90-Day Goal: Day 32: Revise Your Role

You have the ability to increase value in your life. 

As you crush your 90-Day Goal, think about ways in which you can make big or small changes to the roles you play in life. 

As we have been discovering ways to increase value, we have been getting insights by looking through the lenses of progress and order. Progress is all about attaining what is hoped for in the future. Order is all about managing what presently exists. 

Let’s take these lenses and look at two new ways to increase value: Increase Capability and Create Solutions.

First, let’s look at capability. This is the easiest view to see how the roles you are playing are bringing the most value possible. Capability is all about doing. What are you doing, how are you doing it, are there new ways to consider getting it done? 

Your 90-Day Goal may be focused on capability. When viewed through an order lens, you can increase capability by improving efficiency. Who doesn’t want to make the everyday tasks we do more produce? Streamline a process that your team uses or get something done faster by using new technology. 

When viewed through a process lens, you use your skills and talents to step into a role where you can expand capacity.  How can you help to provide a new service?  What can you do to bring a new product to market?

Tip 32: Revise Your Role.

Now let’s take a look at Creating Solutions. 

We all have problems both at work and at home. Problems are opportunities to flex your talents and demonstrate how you can increase value. Viewed through an order lens you solve problems that are currently in your system. 

If something is broken, fix it, even if it is not in your job description. If something is missing that is needed, then go and get it or step into the empty spot yourself. Everyone will appreciate you for making a pain point disappear. 

You can also look through the progress lens and anticipate problems, preventing them before they drain energy or cost money. Use your experience and training to look upstream and offer solutions that will impress your boss or keep your family from experiencing harm. Examples include preventative maintenance on appliances, upgrading software, investing in leadership development.  

No one will necessarily ask you to increase value by increasing capability or creating solutions. But a small amount of gumption and a tweak to the role you are playing are ways to help increase value. 

Bring your ideas, fill the gap, anticipate problems and present solutions. Revise how you think about your role to increase value where you live, work and play.
